& all that drama.
anyway, i was purging my closet of the massive amount of clothes i’ve outgrown stylistically recently & with all that cleared space & room to improve my wardrobe, i was inspired to sew again (: after almost half a year! my sewing machines were so dusty. where does time go?

first in an upcoming sewing spree is a reconstructed dress.

before:

Photobucket

that classic laughing vampire dress that so many of us european goths owned or considered owning at some point. as much as i loved it, i didn’t wear it more than once. which is probably a good thing.

even now it was actually pretty hard to cut up. i kept thinking what a shame it would be to waste such a pretty dress. & what to DO with it? i was questioning all my ideas for hours.

after:

but in the end it became much cuter & wearable on a daily basis. i love it more now ^-^ it’s so much lighter & more practical. especially lighter! the clowns who designed it obviously didn’t consider how the massive weight of such a large amount of fabric that heavy would affect the shape of the dress. if i had worn it more often it would probably have stretched completely out of proportion. but now it’s nice & light. i added elastic on the inside too, because it still stretched too much for my liking at the waistline.

Photobucket

the fabric really isn’t captured very well. it looks SO MUCH better with the naked eye. i love that fabric. i could really use more of it in my wardrobe.

[subtle plug] & since you’re interested in the clothes i make, a lot of what was purged from my closet is what i made myself, in excellent condition & for sale at a super low price. also some clothing from other diy designers & some odd vintage. i put all the good stuff in an album on my facebook page thing. take a gander! you can e-mail (maraleopard [at] gmail [dot] com) me if you see anything you want. everything that’s not sold before may 16th is going in the charity clothing bins, so bid now or forever hold your peace. [/subtle plug]

thanks for looking & reading & your continued support! have a fabulous day/night, wherever you are.

ps. i didn’t mean that bidding literally. i don’t like haggling over prices.

book time!

(bookshelves above my bed, way less than half of the books i own)

with all the books i’ve been reading lately a post like this was inevitable, really. (since i got myself that new stack of books the sunday before last i’ve read seven; halfway through the eight, the virgin suicides ♥, right now) besides, i’ve been neglecting my blog way too much & needed to post something new & different.

if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you might remember that one of my goals for this year was to read at least 78 books. so far i’ve read 33.

Photobucket

1. twee vrouwen – harry mulisch (for school, when i was still in it)
2. een leeg huis – marga minco (school)
3. artemis fowl: de russische connectie – eoin colfer
love this series. fantastic characters, plot, general writing style. wish i could get them in english!
4. coraline – neil gaiman
i should not have watched the movie first. i kept automatically comparing them, which greatly detracted from my enjoyment of it. still awesome though.
5. bezonken rood – jeroen brouwers (school)
6. sleuteloog – hella s. haasse (school)
surprisingly awesome.
7. terug tot ina damman – s. vestdijk (school)
8. artemis fowl: de verloren kolonie – eoin colfer
9. bloodsong – melvin burgess
10. the girl who loved tom gordon – stephen king
11. cirque du freak: sons of destiny – darren shan (re-read)
best ending to a series ever.
12. vittorio the vampire – anne rice
13. dead until dark – charlaine harris
one of the few modern vampire books/series i really love. i love sookie (finally, a good, strong female main character who isn’t annoying), i love the vampires in it (who are actually vampires), i love the tone & setting. it’s the perfect antidote for that twilight shit.
14. gossip girl: er is geen betere – cecily von ziegesar
love this series too. it’s pretty much the only ‘chick lit’ i can stand to read.
15. stargirl – jerry spinelli
i can barely express how much i love this book. read it if you haven’t already.
16. series of unfortunate events: the reptile room – lemony snicket
so tragic, yet so very funny & clever. this year i will really finish this amazing series.
17. the fountainhead – ayn rand
same as #15.
18. de gevleugelde kat – isabel hoving
recommended to me by a friend. it’s so original, i love it. it’s translated to english too.
19. dead as a doornail – charlaine harris
20. definitely dead – charlaine harris
21. dreamcatcher – stephen king
22. de grote freakshow – darren shan (re-read)
23. all together dead – charlaine harris
24. monstrous regiment – terry pratchett
loved, loved, loved this. just all those girls dressing up as boys would make this one of my new favourite books. but it’s also just hilarious. i really should read terry pratchett books more often. if only the english ones weren’t ALWAYS loaned out at the library…
25. m is for magic – neil gaiman
26. haunted – chuck palahniuk ?
the most disgusting, disturbing, brilliant book i’ve ever read. it’s really funny too, at times.
27. series of unfortunate events: the wide window – lemony snicket
28. doing it – melvin burgess
i’ve come across this book so often & was always hesitant to read it because the plot didn’t speak to me at all. but, melvin burgess is one of my favourite writers & no matter what the story is about, i tend to love it. so i did finally read it & predictably loved it. besides, how could i resist a book that was an ‘assault on teenage morals’?
29. anansi boys – neil gaiman
30. het transgalactisch liftershandboek – douglas adams
aka the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy. this was such a pain to read. not because of the story, no, no, no, i loved that, but because of the language i’d read it in. it was the perfect reminder to not read books translated from english anymore if i could help it. they changed all the names (& i think places? the story started somewhere near amsterdam) & butchered a lot of the jokes & science things & generally dutchified it SO MUCH. my god. i’m totally re-reading this in english. & staying away from translated books. (in the spirit of ranting at dutch: i actually started reading the translated neverwhere from neil gaiman today, i had already loaned it from the library before the aforementioned translation-trauma & after two pages i already couldn’t stand it anymore (‘alles kits‘? said by a grown woman? what the hell?) & went right back to the library to get it out of my sight. & then i went to the bookstore to buy it in english)
31. series of unfortunate events: the miserable mill – lemony snicket
32. series of unfortunate events: the austere academy – lemony snicket
33. living dead in dallas – charlaine harris

what books have you read lately? any recommendations? want me to review the books i read as i go along?

Photobucket

i love you. i love your general attitude, i love your wild, colourful, devil-may-care style, i love that you make & upcycle a lot if not all of your clothes, i love that you’re always trying new things, i love how much you’ve evolved since your trashy life days. then you started talking about your own clothing line. i was pretty excited to see what fun, outlandish things you would come up with. with your creativity & aesthetic, how could it be anything less than brilliant?

Photobucket

“Betsey Johnson blowing a big fat kiss at the beach on a hot summer night as the clock strikes 12 in a rocket ship taking off for a prison in space while “girls just wanna have fun” plays out of a cherry pie boombox .” is how you described your designs for lipstick prophets. it sounded amazing. i was already thinking of ways to be able to afford some of your creations. the release date crept closer & closer. eventually, you posted pictures of the fruits of your hard, hard work. i was sorely disappointed. they were just three different pieces of very basic, standard, unimaginative clothing that all came in three different prints: a weird planet one, one leopard ruined with pink cherries all over & a kinda cool black & white striped with a big red lipstick mark. that’s what you call designing clothes? slapping a quasi-original print on some standard, badly cut things?

& then: “Coco De Coeur is a new line im working on coming out in May. Its clothing for the Teenage Angst. My inspirations were punks, squaters, rebels, trouble makers… basically the bad ass kids we all envy because they simply do what they want! Think Barbie meets Sid Vicous.” again, it was an amazing concept. if you hadn’t posted pictures of the ‘designs‘ yet, i would probably have a renewed hope. but you did. & behold:

Photobucket

big, flimsy white t-shirts with some words & barbie pictures on them. how ground-breaking. at least, that’s what your many fans who blindly follow you think. they all automatically call your ‘designsso amazing & original. i have to disagree. i think you could do MUCH better. i wished you would.

maybe you think that i’m just jealous. well, i would be lying if i said i wasn’t. i don’t even have to know the exact amount of clothes you sold up ’til now to know that it’s more than i could in five years. but this isn’t about that. i suppose there’s just that market for unoriginal, cheap, mediocre things. it’s sad, really. & it won’t be changing anytime soon. ah, well. good luck cashing in on it! not that you need it, being audrey kitching and all.

so, last week i read this interesting article from corrine on frock & roll about insecurity & where it stems from. her conclusion was from other people. out of experience, i couldn’t help but concur.
someone commented that she COMPLETELY blamed the media with their “impossibly thin and hopelessly perfect, unrealistic women” & claimed that it was time to embrace “REAL women,” you know the supposedly imperfect ones with meat on their bones. well, that defiant ignorance pissed me off so much, i ran out of space ranting in the comment box.
okay, well not literally. but it became so long, it could’ve been an article. & then i of course realized “hey, this could be an article! i have my own goddamn blog.” so, instead of flaming the hell out of that poor, probably otherwise very decent girl, i decided to write this. *ahem*

let me start by asking you where you think your insecurities about your body come from. really think about it.
i’ll bet my fabulous new sewing machine that at least most of them come from other people in your environment. probably from family members or friends/schoolmates innocently teasing you or just trying to hurt you, which a lot of small people tend to do. have you ever paid any attention to how pretty someone else was compared to you before your childish self-confidence took that blow? i didn’t think so. why would you have, right? why would anyone who doesn’t have the utmost confidence in themselves & their looks ever compare themselves to other people around them or on tv or in magazines?

Photobucket

of course, the person who has the utmost confidence in themselves & their looks is a rare one indeed. & everyone else does compare themselves to other people, including those in the media. i believe it’s a symptom, not the cause of anything. sure, it doesn’t help that there are so many “impossibly thin and hopelessly perfect, unrealistic” people in the media, flanked by advice on how to become like them, but still, symptom.
soooooo many people blame the media for physical insecurities & eating disorders, but i think that’s as silly as blaming marilyn manson for columbine. it’s merely, unfortunate, fuel for a fire that’s already blazing. besides, physical insecurities & eating disorders existed waaaaaaayyyyy before the media dominated by “impossibly thin and hopelessly perfect, unrealistic” people.
why not start saying positive things (& only positive things!) about other people, instead of finding a scapegoat? you’d be surprised what a difference that could make in a person’s life. here’s an example of what you should nevereverevereverevereverevereverEVER say to a child insecure about their looks: “well, sweetie, you just have more things to work on than other people.” try “what the hell are you talking about? you’re beautiful the way you are. & that acne? it’s only temporary, you shouldn’t worry about it so much. it’s nothing your radiant smile won’t cast in the shadows.”

Photobucket

but back to the media for a second. have you ever spared a thought to think of what those “impossibly thin and hopelessly perfect, unrealistic” people think of themselves? those people that spend more than half their lives just desperately maintaining their supposed perfection? those that get passed a cigarette when they complain that they’re hungry, because the sample size 0 clothes are the slightest bit too tight on them? those who never see an un-retouched picture of themselves go to print, because whatever the masses may claim, they’re not perfect enough? those that get rejected for jobs simply because there was a “prettier” candidate? those that regularly get yelled at to “oh my god, eat a cow, ya twig!” by complete strangers? those that are mercilessly criticized on their looks by the other people working in the media? & those consuming the media? how would you feel if you were one of them?
i honestly think those “impossibly thin and hopelessly perfect, unrealistic women*” are the real victims of the media. & i think it’s preposterous that it’s become so socially acceptable to trash those “impossibly thin and hopelessly perfect, unrealistic women*” purely because of their looks. & the same people who do, get mortally offended when someone calls them out for being fat! are you kidding me?
& then of course, there are those ignorant people that only consider curvy, ‘imperfect’ women “REAL.” uhm, who are they to decide that those “impossibly thin and hopelessly perfect, unrealistic women*” are not real women? obviously, they are female & exist. what other criteria do you need?

rant over.

*only referring specifically to women here, because it’s more fitting in this area. not because i think male models/actors are left completely untouched by the industry they work in or whatever, because i don’t think that.

& please share this article if you liked it :] i’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject as well.
